If you think of reflexology at all, you probably think of feet. Traditional reflexology involves massaging or applying pressure to parts of the feet in an attempt to benefit other parts of the body or one's general health.
An alternative therapy, reflexology sometimes doesn't get much respect from the mainstream medical community, but it has many faithful devotees, including plenty of people in Rowan County.
Reflexology, according to the American Reflexology Certification Board, "is a scientific art based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all body parts. The physical act of applying specific pressures using thumb, finger and hand techniques result in stress reduction which causes a physiological change in the body."

When your feet are tired and aching, who ya gonna call? A foot reflexologist might be one. Or just try letting the "crunchiness" in your feet mingle with sand between your toes during a walk along the beach. That "crunchiness" in the heels or soles of your feet "could be due to uric acid deposits, which reflexology helps to disperse," according to Makiki reflexologist Suzanne Garrett.
Foot reflexology is based on the premise that our nerve zones or reflex points go from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all vital organs on the way.
In these hectic times, we are all looking for ways to both relax and naturally heal the many maladies that stress and tension can produce. Reflexology is the perfect solution for restoring body, mind, and spirit. What is Reflexology?
I’ve always been interested in alternative medicine,” says Mary Buchanan, a nurse at Misericordia Health Centre who recently decided to pursue certification in reflexology. “I’ve had reflexology treatments myself. They were relaxing and relieved stress.
Reflexology is holistic, it treats the whole person not just the presenting symptoms. It is suitable for all ages. Many people find a course of treatments beneficial for conditions such as IBS and other digestive disorders, migraines, chronic fatigue, arthritis and stress.
